description

Appearance and leaf

Jancaea heldreichii is a perennial herbaceous plant . The relatively small, almost sedentary leaves stand alternately in a basal, dense rosette of leaves . The simple leaf blade is elliptical or ovate with a pointed upper end and densely silvery-white woolly hairs ( trichome ).

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

Page Constantly Blütenstandsschäften are the zymösen inflorescences and contain few flowers . The hermaphrodite flowers are usually four, rarely five-fold with a double flower envelope . The mostly four, rarely five free sepals are elongated. The usually four, rarely five, light lavender-colored petals are fused tubular-bell-shaped. The corolla tube is about 1 centimeter long. The crown is slightly two-lipped and the four, rarely five corolla lobes are egg-shaped with a rounded upper end. Most of the four, rarely five stamens do not protrude above the corolla. The egg-shaped ovary is hairy fluffy. The stylus and the anthers are almost black.

The ellipsoidal capsule fruit opens septicidally.

Chromosome set

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56.

Occurrence

This endemic occurs only on Mount Olympus in Thessaly, Greece. Jancaea heldreichii thrives in shady and moist crevices in limestone at altitudes of rarely 100 to mostly 1000 to 2100 meters.

Systematics

The first description of Jancaea heldreichii was made in 1875 by Pierre Edmond Boissier in Plantarum Novarum Orientalium , 1, page 5, the genus name was in the same year from the first to describe in Jankaea changed, this name has long been predominantly in use. The proposal of the botanist Laurence Edgar Skog to preserve the generic name in the spelling with "k" was rejected by the Committee for Spermatophyta of the ICBN . So the valid generic name is Jancea . The name honors the Hungarian botanist Victor von Janka (1837–1890). The specific epithet heldreichii honors the German botanist Theodor Heinrich von Heldreich .

Jancaea heldreichii is the only species of the monotypic genus Jancaea from the tribe Didymocarpeae within the Gesneriaceae family .
