Janet E. Smith

Janet Elizabeth Smith (* 1950 ) is an American classical philologist and philosopher; she has taught moral theology at several Catholic theological faculties, including Notre Dame University and most recently at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit , Michigan .

Life

education

Smith studied Classical Philology at Grinnell College , where she received her bachelor's degree in 1972. She was awarded a Magistra in 1975 at the University of North Carolina . She received her doctorate in classical philology from the University of Toronto in 1982 . She wrote her dissertation on Plato's use of myth as an educational tool under the direction of PhD supervisor Timothy Barnes .

University post

After graduating, Smith taught philosophy at Notre Dame University for nine years. She then went to the University of Dallas , where she taught and received tenure for 12 years . In 2001 she moved to the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and was retired in 2019.

Church commissions and orders

Several Holy See agencies have engaged Smith as a consultant; most often she worked as a consultor for the Pontifical Family Council .

From 1989 to 1994, Smith served the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life while studying the scriptures on homosexual care written by Sister Jeannine Gramick and Rev. Robert Nugent.

In 2011 she was appointed for a five-year membership in the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity ; The task was the dialogue between the Vatican and Anglicans .

Smith has received two honorary doctorates and the following selection of academic awards:

  • Prolife Person of the Year, Diocese of Dallas
  • 1993 John Cardinal Wright Award, Fellowship of Catholic Scholars
  • Honorary Doctorate in Christian Ethics, Franciscan University of Steubenville
  • Honorary Doctorate, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary ( Philadelphia )
  • Scholar in Residence at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity in 2008.
  • 2008 Veritas Award, Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal, Ave Maria University

Media appearances

Known as an expert in American Catholicism, Smith taught many times on Humanae Vitae and Pope John Paul II teaching on theology of the body . She is a sought-after speaker on Catholic sexual morality and bioethics.

On television, she has appeared on the Geraldo Show, Fox News, CNN International, CNN Newsroom and Al Jazeera. She has been seen in several shows on the EWTN station .
