description

The Japanese Oregon grape is an evergreen shrub up to 2 meters high . The branches of the shrub are upright and not very branched. The leaves are up to 50 centimeters long; they consist of 7 to 19 leaflets that are oblong-ovate and up to 10 centimeters long; the leaflets are only slightly arched and have 3 to 7 thorny teeth on each side. The upper side of the leaf is glossy gray-green, the underside of the leaf is strikingly yellow-green (which is an important distinguishing feature compared to the otherwise very similar Beales Mahonia ( Mahonia bealei )). The flowers appear from February to May and are sulfur-yellow in color and strongly scented; they are in up to 20 centimeters long, loose bunches of 10 together. The fruits of the Japanese Oregon grape are egg-shaped, dark purple and frosted.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

use

This species is used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks. It is hardy in Central Europe .

various

With the Lomaria-leaved Oregon grape , the Japanese Oregon grape forms the hybrid Mahonia × media .

Mahonia japonica 'Bealei' is a synonym for Beales Oregon grape ( Mahonia bealei ).

Systematics

The basionym for the species is Ilex japonica Thunb. ; the corresponding plant description by the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg was published in 1784. The first accepted description under the name Mahonia japonica by Augustin Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1821. The genre, however, is viewed as controversial; according to GRIN, the description by Robert Brown published in 1818 under the name Berberis japonica (Thunb.) R. Br. is the valid one.
