Jasmine Choi

Jasmine Choi (* 1983 in Seoul ) is a South Korean flautist who completed her musical training in the USA and lives in Austria .

Career

Choi first took violin and piano lessons before switching to the flute at the age of nine. At the age of sixteen she came to the USA and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner . After graduating with a bachelor's degree, she earned a master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music .

In 2006 Choi became deputy first flutist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Paavo Järvi . In addition she stepped u. a. with the Philadelphia Orchestra , the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra , the Czech Philharmonic and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and played concerts by François Devienne , Joseph Haydn , Jacques Ibert , André Jolivet , Rolf Liebermann , Saverio Mercadante , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Carl Nielsen , Carl Reinecke , Antonio Vivaldi , Heitor Villa-Lobos and others. Her repertoire also includes works by contemporary Korean composers such as Yun I-sang , and she has commissioned Solbong Kim and James Ra .

As a chamber musician, Choi a. a. participated in the Pacific Music Festival , the Sarasota Music Festival and the Professional Workshop at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas . In 2012 she became principal flutist with the Wiener Symphoniker , but her contract was not renewed in 2013. On three solo CDs Choi u. a. Flute concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Johann Sebastian Bach's violin concertos in transcription for flute and Claude Bolling's suite for flute and jazz trio.

After her career as Associate Principal Flute with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, she received a one-year trial contract as Principal Flute with the Wiener Symphoniker in 2012, where she prevailed against 245 other applicants. Towards the end of the contract, however, the orchestra spoke out against an extension of the contract. While Choi identified the reasons in her gender, her Asian origins and her lack of connection to Vienna, the orchestra did not comment on the reasons.

In 2015 she was named one of the “Top 10 Greatest Flutists in History” by Sinfini Magazine (UK). She also won the "Yamaha Young Performing Artists" competition (2004)

Four of her seven CDs were published by Sony Classical , first the Mozart flute concertos and then virtuoso flute works under the title "Fantasy". Other works were “Claude Bolling Suite” for flute and “Jazz Trio”. She also recorded the Mozart flute quartets with members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and released her solo CD “The Telemann Files” with the help of a crowdfunding campaign.
