Jawbreaker is an American punk band that was formed at New York University in the late 1980s and was later particularly active in California . The group is considered to be extremely influential, especially for bands from the emocore sector.

Band history

The high school -Freunde Blake Schwarzenbach and Adam Pfahler, already at school in Santa Monica had played together in a band, met while studying in New York in 1986 at bassist Chris Bauermeister, the per flyer had been looking for people with whom he could start a band. After the group had rehearsed for a while under different names and with a different singer (Jon Liu) and a first demo had been recorded, Jawbreaker in its final line-up was created in 1988, when Schwarzenbach had replaced the resigned singer. That year the band sent their song Shield Your Eyes to a Los Angeles radio station , which actually played it, attracting the attention of the independent label Shredder Records , where a Jawbreaker song was first released as part of a compilation in 1989. That year the band played their first concerts and recorded more tracks. In 1990 the band released their first album, Unfun . At the following concerts the band shared the stage with Samiam and Fuel, among others . At the end of the year, the band members took a break that lasted until the summer of 1991. During this time, they finished their university careers.

The group's second album, Bivouac , was released in 1992. Then Jawbreaker played a European tour for the first time. In 1993 they recorded their third album, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy , with Steve Albini ; that year Schwarzenbach was a guest on a Screeching Weasel album, and Jawbreaker played in the opening act for Nirvana , which led to sellout allegations by fans. These became even louder when the group signed a contract with Geffen Records in 1994, despite previously expressed contempt for major labels . Dear You , the group's last regular album , was released there in 1995. It broke up in 1996 after years of extensive touring, which had also led to various health problems for the band members. In the last year of her career, Jawbreaker was on a world tour that had taken her to Australia , among other things , to see the opening act for the Foo Fighters .

According to Jawbreaker

Shortly after the split, singer Blake Schwarzenbach founded the band Jets to Brazil together with Chris Daly from Texas Is the Reason and bassist Jeremy Chatelain . The band's own label Blackball Records , which is led by Adam Pfahler, released several posthumous Jawbreaker records, including a live album. Bauermeister resumed his academic career.

In 2003 a tribute album was released for Jawbreaker, on which Face to Face , Nerf Herder , Kill Your Idols , Sparta , Fall Out Boy and Bigwig tried their hand at songs by the group. In 2004 Jawbreaker were represented with a live version of their song Chesterfield King on the second part of the Rock Against Bush series.

Reunion

In March 2018, the Jawbreaker musicians gave some reunion concerts in New York City and Los Angeles. Katie Crutchfield ( Waxahatchee ) joined them in vocals at the sold out events .
