Jay Dobyns

Jay Anthony Dobyns (born July 1961 in Indiana ), also known by his alias and nickname Jaybird , is a former undercover agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). He gained international fame after investigating the Hells Angels from 2001 to 2003 . As part of his role as a rocker , he and his team faked the murder of a rival motorcycle club (MC) member. As a result, he was offered membership in the Hells Angels. His book about his investigation, published in 2009, became a bestseller .

Life

Youth and education

Dobyns was born in Indiana in 1961 and grew up in Tucson , Arizona . In 1980 he graduated from Sahuaro High School . He studied at the University of Arizona until 1985 , where he played for the Arizona Wildcats as a wide receiver in the Pacific-12 Conference Football. He was named a member of Arizona's all-century football team. In 1985 and 1986 he played football in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the United States Football League (USFL). After two years of playing, he gave up a professional career to become a police officer. Dobyns was named an ATF agent in 1987. After only four days on duty, he was taken hostage and shot. The chest wound was tended by Richard Carmona , who was later appointed 17th Surgeon General of the United States .

Undercover investigation

Dobyns worked as an undercover agent on various operations, mostly involving violent crime, drug trafficking, or firearms. He also infiltrated gangs and posed as a hit man. In 2001 he was one of the leading investigators in an undercover investigation against the Hells Angels. For this purpose, Dobyns and his team posed as nomads of the MC Solo Angels . Dobyns played a money collector and arms dealer. Through a fake murder of a member of the Mongol MC , a gang hostile to the Hells Angels, he was offered membership in the Hells Angels in 2003. However, prior to the induction ceremony, the investigation came to an end and a number of arrests of senior members of the Hells Angels followed on charges under RICO law . Although the operation is considered a success, there were disagreements between the authorities involved in the course of the trial and some defendants were sentenced to low prison terms or acquitted.

Consequences of the investigation against the Hells Angels

After Dobyn's real name became known during the 2004 trial, there were a number of death threats from members of the Hells Angels, the Aryan Brotherhood and the Mara Salvatrucha . In 2008 Dobyns' house was set on fire. His family, who were home at the time of the crime, were not injured, but the family facilities and property were destroyed.

After the threats were ignored by the federal authorities, Dobyns acted as a whistleblower and criticized the abuses of the United States Department of Justice , which did not adequately protect its undercover agents. Both the United States Office of the Inspector General and the United States Office of Special Counsel agreed with him on this claim . His complaints were forwarded to the President of the United States .

Dobyns has appeared on shows such as Anderson Cooper 360 ( CNN ) and The FOX Report with Sheppard Smith ( FOX ) covering the death threats and publicizing the authorities' inability to protect him. Magazines such as Newsweek , the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal also reported on Dobyns.

In early 2009, his book No Angel - My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels was published in the United States , which was on the New York Times bestseller list in February 2009 . Co-author is Nils Johnson-Shelton . In 2010 the book was published under the title Falscher Engel: Mein Höllentrip as an undercover agent for the Hells Angels in German translation by Riva Verlag . The book remained on the non-fiction bestseller list of the news magazine Der Spiegel for several months . The highest ranking was 3rd place.

Dobyns now heads Jay Dobyns Group, a private security firm that conducts public presentations and trains law enforcement officers.

reception

Dobyns' work as an investigator served as a template for the novels Angels of Death by Julian Sher and William Marsden and Running with the Devil by Kerrie Droban . Dobyns appeared as himself in the documentaries Gangland: Behind Enemy Lines of The History Channel and Inside: Outlaw Bikers - Hells Angels of the National Geographic Channel . Fox also dedicated an episode of America's Most Wanted to the investigator .

In 2006, Dobyns was inducted into the Hall of Fame at his Tucson, Arizona high school. He was also inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 .
