The Jbel Sarhro (also Jbel Saghro or Djebel Saghro ; tamazight ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ ⵏ ⵙⴰⵖⵔⵓ) is a mountain range of volcanic origin in Morocco belonging to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa . Some geologists see the 150 km long and 50 km wide mountain range as a north-eastern extension of the Anti-Atlas ; others see it as a separate mountain stick.

location

The Jbel Sarhro is bounded north by the High Atlas and south by the Sahara foreland . To the west it encounters the mountain range of the Anti Atlas; to the east it runs out a little longer to meet the mountain range of the Sahara Atlas in Morocco just before the border to Algeria . Its highest peak is the Jbel Amalou n'Mansour with 2712  m . Other high peaks are the Jbel Kouaouch with 2592  m ., The Jbel Afougal ( 2196  m ) and the Jbel Amlal ( 2447  m ). There are also several mountain passes in the Jbel Sarhro area, including the 2283  m high Tizi n'Tazazert .

population

A small village in Jbel Sarhro

There are no cities or towns in the Jbel Sarhro region; Even smaller villages are few and far between, as the proximity to the Sahara creates unsettling conditions and the area is difficult to access due to the confinement by the northern mountain ranges. Only where water occurs in the form of oases or the sometimes water-bearing desert rivers , the wadis (oueds) , have Berbers from the warlike tribe of the Aït Atta, who in 1933 with all means, but ultimately unsuccessfully, against the colonial rule of the French put up a fight, settled down permanently.

Hiking and trekking

Mostly from Boumalne Dadès and especially from Tagdilt (in the north) or from N'Kob (in the south), various hikes in the Jbel Sarhro area are possible. Some mountains are popular with climbers. Because of the sparse population, it is essential to ensure that there is sufficient water and food supplies.

The Jbel Sarhro is not to be confused with the Jbel Sirwa which is about 200 km further west.
