N'Kob (sometimes written Nkob or Nekob ; Arabic النقوب, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⵏⵇⵯⴱ Nqʷb ) is an oasis with about 4,000 inhabitants and a rural community ( commune rurale ) with almost 7,000 inhabitants on the south side of the Jbel-Sarhro mountain range in the Moroccan province of Zagora in the Drâa-Tafilalet region .

location

N'Kob is located between two mountain rivers that carry water in winter and spring about 140 km (driving distance) east of Ouarzazate and a good 100 km north of Zagora on the R108 at an altitude of about 1045  m . The climate is desert-like; the sparse rain (approx. 95 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter months.

population

The local population consists almost exclusively of Berbers from the Aït Atta tribe . They speak the regional Berber dialect , but also Moroccan Arabic and French.

economy

Until well into the 20th century, the inhabitants of the date palm oasis lived as a self-sufficient subsistence provider mainly from agriculture, which also included cattle breeding (sheep, goats, chickens); Trade and handicrafts also played a certain role. Since the 1970s, the income from trekking and hiking tourism in the Jbel Sarhro area has achieved a not insignificant importance for the overall economic situation of the place.

history

In the absence of written records, almost nothing is known about the ancient history of the place. The Aït Atta tribe resisted French colonial rule until the 1930s . The decisive battle in the northeastern mountain gorges of the 1598 m high Jbel Bou Gafer , where a tribal group of around 4,000 people and their herds of cattle withdrew in January 1933, is famous. After heavy losses on both sides, the opponents agreed that the tribe could retain its own jurisdiction and would not come under the suzerainty of Thami El Glaoui .

Attractions

  • N'Kob is the city of Morocco with the most adobe buildings ( tighremts ) - there are 45 or even 52 buildings of this type that are still halfway intact.
  • In the vicinity of N'Kob, accompanied by a guide, you can see some rock carvings.
  • Most of the tourists come because of the hiking and trekking tours in the still very pristine Sarhro Mountains. A 3-day traverse of the mountains with the end in Tagdilt is also possible. Other tours lead to the waterfalls at Taslift .
