Jean-Baptiste de Sénac (* 1693 in or near Lombez in the diocese of Lombez / Gascogne ; † December 20, 1770 in Paris ) was a French doctor, anatomist, cardiologist and personal physician to King Louis XV.

Life

Sénac was born in the French diocese of Lombez. Little is known about his early life, only that he studied medicine at Leiden University , and later in London . Here he had John Freind (1675-1728) as a teacher . In 1723 he was accepted into the Académie des Sciences , practiced from 1727 in Paris and from 1733 at the Versailles hospital of the court. In 1745 he became the personal physician of the Marshal of Saxony. From 1752 to 1770 he was the first personal physician of King Louis XV.

Sénec is best known for its pioneering research in the area of ​​the heart. His most influential book, Traité de la structure du coeur, de son action, et de ses maladies , which deals with the physiology , anatomy and pathology of the heart, he published in 1749. The book deals with ailments and diseases that he examined himself , as well as diagnoses from other doctors about the heart. In addition, this textbook on cardiology confirmed observations made by William Harvey and Richard Lower .

He made many of his discoveries through autopsies . One of these discoveries was the association between atrial fibrillation and mitral regurgitation . He also did extensive research on cardiac hypertrophy . He also examined the effectiveness of cinchona tree extract and rhubarb as a remedy for heart disease.
