Jean-Clément Jeanbart BA (born March 3, 1943 in Aleppo , Syria ) is the incumbent Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church of Aleppo and Apostolic Visitator of the Melkite Church in Western Europe . After the resignation of Patriarch Gregory III, accepted by the Pope on May 6, 2017 . Laham , he was the longest serving bishop Apostolic Administrator of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church until the election of the new Patriarch Joseph Absi on June 22 of the same year.

Life

Jean-Clement Jeanbart was ordained a religious priest of the Aleppine Basilians on April 15, 1968 ( abbreviation : BA). His appointment as successor to Néophytos Edelby he was the Archbishop of Aleppo on August 2, 1995. The Patriarch of Antioch Archbishop Maximos V Hakim ordained him on 16 September 1995 on the bishop , while assisted as co-consecrators the Archbishops François Abou Mokh BS and Habib Bacha SMSP . In 1999 he was appointed Apostolic Visitator for the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Western Europe. He was co-consecrator of Archbishop Nikolaki Sawaf of Latakia . After the outbreak of civil war in Syria , Jeanbart's residence in Aleppo was looted in August 2012.

Relations with Islam in the Middle East

At the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East , Jeanbart declared:

“I propose (in view of the emigration of Christians) that we spread optimism among our believers about their future in the country. Our countries are not entirely without resources and values! Let us learn to be friends with our Muslim brothers; let's help them open up to us! "

Allegations of US policy on Syria

When the US government suspected Syria in 2003 of possessing weapons of mass destruction and thereby supporting the Iraqi regime , Archbishop Jeanbart responded by speaking for the Christians in Syria and saying :

“Some of us are afraid, others feel that there is no imminent danger. However, it is entirely possible that the US is up to something, and we have to prepare for it, because it engages in disinformation. "
