Habib Bacha

Habib Bacha SMSP (born June 24, 1931 in Tire , Lebanon , † November 23, 1999 ) was Melkite Archbishop of Beirut and Jbeil .

Priest and doctorate

At a young age, the priest Habib Bacha - he received his priestly ordination on June 29, 1956 - took over leading church offices. He previously attended St. Paul's Seminary in Jerusalem and completed his studies in theology and philosophy . He then worked in the pilgrimage site of Harissa , in Beirut and in Latakia ( Syria ). He was named Archbishop of Beirut and Jbeil in 1975 and continued his studies in Rome after his episcopal ordination . He received his doctorate in theology in Rome , at the same time he taught at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies , where he was secretary for Islam . From 1968 to 1975 he was Superior General of the Mission Society of St. Paul .

On August 23, 1975, Habib Bacha was appointed Archbishop of Beirut and Jbeil. The episcopal ordination took place on September 14, 1975 by Archbishop Maximos V. Hakim (Patriarch of the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch ). The co-consecrators were the archbishops Jean Bassoul BS (Archbishop of Zahle and Furzol ) and Nicolas Naaman MSSP (Archbishop of Bosra and Hauran ).

1979 marked the official start of the theological dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church . Of the 29 representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, Habib Bacha represented the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. Between 1985 and 1987 he was also the Apostolic Administrator of Banyas . During the apostolic journey of Pope John Paul II in 1997 he was chairman of the Episcopal Commission for the Laity and responsible representative for the youth in Lebanon. At the age of 68, Habib Bacha died on November 23, 1999 of complications from a heart attack.
