Jean Bünter (born July 1, 1923 in Zurich ; † June 22, 1986 in Zumikon ) was a Swiss painter and iron sculptor.

life and work

Jean Bünter grew up in Zurich and completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter from 1940–1944 . In the middle of his engineering studies , Jean Bünter turned to art. He lived in Paris from 1946 to 1950 , where he graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière a . a. with Othon Friesz and Ossip Zadkine . His encounter with the cubist Fernand Léger , with whom he worked for six months in 1948, was formative for him . After various stays abroad u. a. in Russia and China, Jean Bünter lived in the Zurich region from 1950. In addition to his sculptures in public spaces and the designs in sacred buildings, Jean Bünter also worked as an illustrator for publications of the works of Silja Walter and Georg Trakl . Jean Bünter was married to Anita Bünter-Hippenmeyer; the couple had two daughters, Corinne Hochstrasser-Bünter and Daniela Zwinggi-Bünter.

Jean Bünter's artistic affinity to German Expressionism was evident from 1953 onwards in his turn to woodcut and its linear design. Important topics in Bünter's work were religious and humane motifs, which he implemented in various techniques and new forms of expression.
