Jean Bellissard
Jean Vincent Bellissard (born March 1, 1946 in Lyon ) is a French theoretical and mathematical physicist.
Bellissard studied at the Claude Bernard University in Lyon (graduation 1968). In 1969 he received his teacher examination (aggregation) and taught preparatory classes for engineering schools in Lyon. In 1974 he received his doctorate at the University of Marseille (Université de Provence, Marseille) with Raymond Stora (quantum field theory in external fields), where he had been since 1970, first as a lecturer, from 1980 as an assistant professor (in the 1980s he also headed the joint graduate school the southern French universities in the Marseille area) and from 1991 with a full professorship. In between he was, among other things, 1974/75 as a post-doc at the University of Lausanne with Jean-Jacques Loeffel, at the University of Bielefeld (Center for Interdisciplinary Research, 1976) and at the IHES , where he met Alain Connes in 1979/80 non-commutative geometry. In 1983/84 he was at Princeton University and in 1986 at Caltech . In 1990/91 he was at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and at the same time at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1991 to 2002 he was professor and from 1992 to 1996 head of the physics faculty at the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse . In 2000 he was at MSRI and in 2001/02 at IHES and the École polytechnique in Paris. At the same time he was at the Émile Picard laboratory at the University of Toulouse. From 2002 he was also a professor (in both the physics and mathematics departments) at the Georgia Institute of Technology . In 2007 he retired from his professorship in France.
He is known for applications of non-commutative geometry (in the sense of Alain Connes) to aperiodic media in solid-state physics (such as electrons in magnetic fields, quasicrystals and their spectrum, quantum Hall effect , band gap structure (gap labeling)) .
From 1993 to 1999 he was editor of the Annales de l ' Institut Henri Poincaré .
In 1989 he received the Paul Langevin Prize . In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (Noncommutative Geometry and the quantum Hall effect). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
