The University of Lyon I (University of Claude Bernard , UCBL) is the successor to the Natural Science Faculty of Lyon founded in 1833 and the Medical Faculty founded in 1874.

The main campus is La Doua in Villeurbanne . Further university buildings can be found in the Rockefeller district , in the Lyon-Süd hospital and in the Gerland district .

The university, which has existed for over 40 years, has 45,000 students. 4500 employees are divided into 65 research units with 2700 academic staff. The total budget amounts to 405 million euros annually.
