Jean Rupp

Jean-Édouard-Lucien Rupp (born October 13, 1905 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye , † January 28, 1983 ) was a French clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat.

Life

Jean Rupp entered the Saint Sulpice seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux in 1928 . He was ordained a priest on March 31, 1934.

In 1946 he founded the Center Catholique International de Coopération avec l'UNESCO (CCIC) with Jean Larnaud, a lay Catholic, with the support of the apostolic nuncio in France Angelo Roncalli , who later became John XXIII . In 1947 Pope Pius XII appointed made him representative of the Holy See at UNESCO . There he was more of a contact than a diplomat.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on October 28, 1954 titular bishop of Arca in Phenicia and auxiliary bishop in Paris for the Byzantine believers in France . Pope John XXIII appointed him Bishop of Monaco on June 9, 1962 . He was enthroned on October 7, 1962.

Rupp took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . In 1964 he turned to the council because it did not recognize the genocide of the Armenians .

On May 8, 1971, Pope Paul VI. the appointment as titular archbishop pro hac vice of Dionysopolis and apostolic pro-nuncio in Iraq . On March 4, 1975, he was also pro-nuncio in Kuwait .

On July 13, 1978, Pope Paul VI appointed made him permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations in Geneva . He resigned on July 5, 1980 and Edoardo Rovida succeeded him on March 7, 1981.

Pope John Paul II appointed him canon at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore . Rupp died on January 27, 1983 and was buried in the basilica on January 31.
