Jean-Marie Trappeniers (born January 13, 1942 in Vilvoorde , Flemish Brabant Province, † November 2, 2016 ) was a Belgian football goalkeeper .

Career

Trappeniers started playing football as a youth at Vilvoorde FC at the age of ten. In 1956 he joined the RSC Anderlecht , where he made his debut in the First Division in 1959 . A year later he became a regular goalkeeper. In 1962 he won the first of six Belgian championships with Anderlecht, five of them in a row. In 1965 he won the double with the violet-whites with a 3-2 win after extra time against Standard Liège in the Belgian cup final . In 1970 he was in the final of the Messestädte Cup . After a 3-1 win in the first leg in front of their home crowd against Arsenal , Trappeniers and Anderlecht lost 3-0 in the second leg at Highbury Stadium and missed out on an overall win from two games. Paul Van Himst , Jan Mulder and Wilfried Puis were among his more important comrades-in-arms in that golden era of the Brussels suburban club .

When a generation change was initiated at RSC Anderlecht at the end of the 1960s, Trappeniers switched to the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, which is also based in Brussels . After two seasons he went to Antwerp FC in 1973 , where he stayed for the next six years. In 1979 he moved to the second Belgian league to Eendracht Aalst . Two years later he returned to Union Saint-Gilloise for one season until he retired in 1983 with the provincial club KFC Peutie.

National team

Trappeniers played a total of eleven games for the Belgian national team between 1964 and 1970 without being able to establish themselves as number one in the Belgian goal. Until 1967 he stood in the way of Jean Nicolay von Standard Liège , Belgium's 1963 Footballer of the Year , and Fernand Boone of RFC Brugge in 1968 . At the 1970 World Cup in Mexico , in qualifying for where he was used in four out of six games, he was in the Belgian squad, but between the posts was Christian Piot, who was five years his junior .
