The Jeanne d'Arc was a flight deck cruiser or helicopter carrier of the French Navy . It was built in Brest from 1959 to 1961 as La Résolue ; she was in service from 1964. From 1964 she also bore the later name, since the French cruiser Jeanne d'Arc , built in 1930, was decommissioned in that year and the ship's name was thereby vacated.

Its length was 182 m, the displacement of 10,575 tons. The armament included six MM38 Exocet rockets and four, after a conversion in 2000 only two on-board cannons of 100 mm caliber . The Jeanne d'Arc could take six to ten helicopters . The crew numbered about 460 people; if necessary, about 110 officer cadets were added .

Most recently, the Jeanne d'Arc was used as a training ship for the French Navy, but still took part in international missions on her voyages.

On April 11, 2008, the crew of the cruise ship Le Ponant was freed from the violence of pirates from the autonomous region of Puntland ( Somalia ) with the participation of on-board helicopters , and some of the pirates were arrested.

On December 9, 2008, the Jeanne d'Arc set off on her penultimate training trip, which lasted until May 5, 2009. It led across the Mediterranean and the Middle East to Southeast Asia. On this voyage, the Jeanne d'Arc also took part temporarily in the Enduring Freedom and Atalanta operations.

On December 2, 2009, the ship finally began its 45th and final training voyage in Brest, on which it was accompanied by the Courbet , a frigate of the La Fayette class . The trip led first to the West African coast and then across the Atlantic to South America. We continued to Cape Horn to the north. After crossing the Panama Canal and visiting North America, they crossed the Atlantic to take part in Hamburg's 821st port birthday and then back to Brest.

Decommissioning

The Joan of Arc returned from her last training trip to Brest on May 27, 2010 and was then decommissioned on June 7. A replacement of the Jeanne d'Arc as a training ship was not planned. Since then, changing ships have been put together to form training associations as required. The Mistral- class helicopter carrier Tonnerre was the first to take on this task in March 2010.

The Jeanne d'Arc was dismantled in a dry dock in Bassens near Bordeaux.
