Jeff Johnson (bass player)

Jeff Johnson (* 12. December 1954 in Minneapolis ) is an American jazz - bassist .

biography

Jeff Johnson played rock music as a teenager before turning to jazz. At 20, he worked with musicians on the Philadelphia jazz scene ; later u. a. with musicians like Philly Joe Jones , Charlie Rouse , Barney Kessel , Chet Baker , Lew Tabackin and Eddie Daniels . In 1984 he presented his debut album Harbinger . Based in Seattle since 1990 , he worked on several albums by pianists Jessica Williams and Hal Galper in the 1990s and appeared in the John Stowell Trio; he has also accompanied vocalists such as Karrin Allyson , Mark Murphy , Tierney Sutton Marlena Shaw and Kendra Shank . Johnson was also a member of the musician cooperative Scenes and worked on a number of recordings for the Seattle-based label Origin . With his own trio, which includes saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Bill Mintz , he recorded several albums with his own compositions, which Origin appeared. Musically, he integrates older jazz traditions with forms of European free jazz and improvised music .
Jeff Johnson is not to be confused with the jazz guitarist Jef Lee Johnson , who u. a. starred with James Carter and Ronald Shannon Jackson .
