Jens-Rainer Allenberg (born March 16, 1942 in Königsberg (Prussia) ) is a German surgeon and artist. He is considered a pioneer in vascular surgery in Europe.

Life

Jens-Rainer Allenberg was born in Königsberg. His father Martin Allenberg was a senior teacher and also an enthusiastic jazz musician, poet and painter, his brother Detlef Allenberg (senior director) is also a painter and sculptor . In 1945 the family from Königsberg (Prussia) fled to Hamburg, where Jens-Rainer Allenberg attended school and in 1962 passed his Abitur at the Christianeum humanistic high school. In the same year he began studying human medicine in Heidelberg .

In the first semester, he and the painter and architect Fritz Jarchov opened “WERKSTATT 2” in Heidelberg, a workshop for painting and printmaking. In 1968 Allenberg passed his medical state examination. He initially completed his surgical training in experimental surgery with Johannes Schmier and after a year he moved to Fritz Linder's surgical university clinic . He recognized and promoted the operational talent of Jens-Rainer Allenberg and made guest stays in Los Angeles (Professor Longmire, Professor Malony), San Francisco ( American College of Surgeons ), New Orleans (Professor Ochsner, Professor Drapanas) and New York (Professor Spencer). Further stations of his scientific work were:

  • 1971 License to practice medicine and doctorate at the Faculty of Clinical Medicine I at the University of Heidelberg on the subject of the effects of central sympathicolysis before and during standardized hemorrhagic shock (magna cum laude Professor Schmier)
  • 1973–1975 medical officer in the Bundeswehr in the Territorial Command South
  • 1978 specialist in surgery
  • 1979 Senior Physician at the Surgical University Clinic (Fritz Linder) and Head of the Vascular Surgery Section

  • 1981 Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Surgical University Clinic Heidelberg ( Christian Herfarth ).
  • 2001–2007 Medical Director of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery at the Surgical University Clinic in Heidelberg

Scientific work and research focus

Vascular surgery became his scientific and medical interest very early on, so that he is often seen as a pioneer of vascular surgery in Europe. His main research interests were:

  • Carotid Surgery (member of the steering committee of the SPACE study)
  • thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms with endovascular and open surgical techniques
  • endovascular treatment of infrarenal aortic aneurysms (Steering Committee member of the Lifepath Study Europe)
  • Therapy of renal artery lesions
  • simultaneous endovascular and peripheral vascular surgery

Honors and memberships

Allenberg was a co-founder of the journal Vascular Surgery and a member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Surgery , European Journal of Vascular Surgery , Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery , Der Chirurg , Chirurgische Allgemeine , Trauma und Berufskrankheit, magazine for cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. He was the author and co-author of numerous books, publications and video films as well as co-founder of the German-Swiss-Austrian vascular training course and the Vascular International Foundation (Switzerland). He established the annual "Heisses Eisen" symposium in Heidelberg and Munich.

As a member and z. Jens-Rainer Allenberg was a long-time member of the board of directors and was active in numerous scientific societies:

Artistic work

Jens-Rainer Allenberg is self-taught and comes from a family of artists, father painter, brother painter and sculptor. Already in the first semester in Heidelberg Allenberg opened "WERKSTATT 2" in Heidelberg together with the painter and architect Fritz Jarchov. The workshop for painting and printmaking was of great importance to him during his studies and the subsequent professional years to this day. Working as a surgeon and later as a university professor left hardly any time for a second job, while painting had become a necessary compensation. Painting fertilized his surgical work, especially with regard to innovation and new surgical techniques. Later, the painting was added to the work on sculptures, which is particularly related to the field of surgery . Painting was done using the glaze technique, oil, later also acrylic, the motif was people throughout. Sculptures were initially mixed materials, then bronze, and since around 2005 stone and concrete. In the last few years Allenberg has been involved in portrait painting, sculpture and here mainly stone sculptures made of field stone and reinforced concrete. He works in Heidelberg and for 35 years also on Mallorca in Son Barcelo / Cas Concos.
