Jeremy Gray
Jeremy J. Gray (born April 25, 1947 ) is a British mathematician.
Gray studied mathematics at Oxford and the University of Warwick , where he received his PhD in 1980 under David Fowler (and Ian Stewart ). From 1974 he was at the Open University in Milton Keynes , where he has been professor for the history of mathematics since 2002. He also teaches regularly at Warwick University and is an Affiliated Research Fellow in the History of Science department at Cambridge University . In 1996 he was Resident Fellow at the Dibner Institute for the History of Science at MIT .
Gray is primarily concerned with the history of geometry and function theory in the 19th and 20th centuries. He edited Carl Friedrich Gauss ' mathematical diary and a new edition of Waldo Dunnington's Gauss biography (with additions).
In 1998 he was an invited lecturer at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( The Riemann Roch Theorem and Geometry. 1854–1914 ). In 2009 he received the Albert Leon Whiteman Memorial Prize of the American Mathematical Society , of which he is a fellow. In 2016 he was awarded the Otto Neugebauer Prize of the European Mathematical Society .
June Barrow-Green is one of his PhD students .
