Jerry Toth

Jerry Toth (born November 15, 1928 in Windsor / Ontario ; † March 31, 1999 in Toronto ) was a Canadian jazz musician (saxophone, clarinet, flute), composer, arranger and producer.

Live and act

Toth, son of the cimbalom maker and violinist Carl Thot , took saxophone lessons from Frank Hiron in Toronto and learned the clarinet from Herbert Pye . In 1953 he studied woodwind instruments with Dale Eisenhuth in Los Angeles. From 1945 to 1953 he played a. a. in the bands of Stan Patton , Bobby Gimby and Trump Davidson . With trombonist Ross Culley and saxophonist Roy Smith , he led a seventeen-piece jazz band from 1952 to 1957. Between 1956 and 1974 he was also a member of Phil Nimmons ' bands , with whom he also studied orchestration .

From 1954 Thot played the saxophone in the orchestras of the CBC under the direction of Jack Cane . At the end of the 1950s he was musical director of the CBC program Parade , and later he also composed jingles for the station. His instrumentation of the theme for Hockey Night in Canada , the official Ontario theme he composed for Canada's centenary, A Place to Stand , and music for Rich Little's TV show A Christmas Carol became famous in Canada . For the label CTL he produced LPs with Bobby Edwards ' Fat City Guitars and with the trombonist Ted Roderman .

In addition to several LPs of his own, Thot has played numerous albums as a soloist in Phil Nimmons' band and member of Rob McConnell's jazz orchestra Boss Brass since 1956 ; he was also involved in the recordings of Jimmy Dale , Gene Lees , Guido Basso , Peter Appleyard and Sammy Nestico . Occasionally he also performed with his own jazz quartet in Toronto. His brothers Rudy and Tony Thot also became known as musicians.
