Yevgeny Konstantinovich Suvorov ( Russian Евгений Константинович Суворов ; born January 14 . Jul / 26. January  1880 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † thirtieth December 1953 ) was a Russian-Soviet zoologist , important ichthyologist and researchers in the field of fish farming .

Live and act

After completing his studies at Petersburg University (1903) Suvorov worked at the Department of Zoology. From 1921 to 1931 he was director of the ichthyological institute in Leningrad, which was created on his initiative, and in 1931 he became professor of ichthyology at the University of Leningrad, where he held a chair from 1949 to 1952 .

Since 1904 Suvorov took part in many scientific expeditions (later also as their leader) to research the fish and marine mammals in the Baltic Sea , in the Caspian , White , Japanese , Okhotsk and Bering Sea as well as in the Russian inland waters. In the course of these expeditions, many new areas for the fishing industry had also been discovered. In 1904 he discovered large stocks of herrings in the Caspian Sea for the first time and turned his attention to their catch and economic benefits. For many years he studied the most important farm fish, including herring, cod and plaice . In 1929 he discovered significant herring accumulations in the Barents Sea . Suworow also discovered large deposits of pollack for the first time in the Far Eastern seas .

Suvorov was also the first Russian explorer to devote himself to catching fur seals and sea otters on the commanders' islands. His work The Commanders ' Islands and the Fur Industry on Them (Командорские острова и пушной промысел на них), published in 1912, makes a remarkable contribution to solving the problem of preserving fauna while at the same time making rational use of the islands' bioresources. His research on the Commander Islands was important for the conclusion of the international agreement between Russia , Japan , Great Britain (for Canada ) and the USA on the protection of these marine mammals in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean (1911).

Suvorov was also the first to conduct experiments on the artificial breeding of salmon in 1920 .

A peculiarity of Suvorov's scientific activity was that - in addition to purely biological questions - he always paid great attention to questions of fishing and fish breeding and processing. Suworow was therefore since 1911 an advisor and member of various state commissions on questions of fishing and fishing.

In total, Suworow has written more than 200 scientific papers (including some in German), including several manuals. His foundations of ichthyology (1940, 2nd extended edition 1948; German 1959) are regarded as the standard work .
