Yevhen Mohylevskyi

Jewhen Hedeonowytsch Mohylewskyj ( Ukrainian Євген Гедеонович Могилевський ; Russian Евгений Гедеонович Могилевский Jewgeni Gedeonowitsch Mogilewski , * 16th September 1945 in Odessa , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian classical pianist and teacher.

Life

Mohylewskyj received piano lessons from his mother, the music teacher Serafima Mogilewskaja , who taught him at the Stolarski Music School in Odessa. From 1963 he studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Heinrich Neuhaus , after his death with Stanislaw Neuhaus and later with Jakow Sak . After postgraduate studies, he completed his piano training and began teaching at the Conservatory in 1972.

Mohylewskyj won the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels in 1964 , gained international fame and in 1966 was awarded the Harriet Cohen Medal in London for Best Artist of the Year. In 1974 he made his debut in Germany. Mohylewskyj seldom performed outside the Soviet Union, sound recordings remained rare - he concentrated on teaching at the Moscow Conservatory.

In 1987 Mohylewskyji was a juror at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth , and in 1990 he received the President's Award from Tel Aviv University . In 1991 Mohylewskyj settled in Belgium, gave concerts in the United States and taught at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels from 1992 . In 1999 he was the soloist in the concert for the Day of German Unity in the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Andrei Boreiko .

Mohylewskyj's recording of Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Moscow Philharmonic under Kirill Kondrashin from 1964 and the recording of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 8 op. 84 in 1977 have reference status .

Mohylewskyj is married to the Russian piano teacher Olga Roumschewitsch and is the father of the pianists Maxim and Alexander Mogilewski .
