James Robert "Jim" Davis (born July 28, 1945 in Marion , Indiana ) is an American comic artist and the inventor of the cartoon character Garfield .

biography

Jim Davis spent his youth - like his cartoon character Jon Arbuckle - on a small farm with his father James, his brother Dave and his 25 cats, which were in the care of his mother Betty. His parents were ranchers. Because of an asthma condition , Davis was often forced to stay indoors, and so young Jim spent his time drawing. His drawings were so bad at first that he often even had to write down what they were supposed to depict.

From 1964 Davis attended Ball State University in Muncie , where he perfected his drawing skills and where he met his first wife, Carolyn. After college, Davis worked for a local advertising agency for two years . In 1969 Davis became an assistant to comic artist Tom K. Ryan , the inventor of Tumbleweeds .

First he invented the cartoon character Gnorm Gnat , a mosquito that was published regularly in the Pendleton Times. After five years he reoriented and Garfield was born . Jim Davis named the cartoon tomcat after his grandfather James Garfield Davis. The very first Garfield comic strip was published in 41 newspapers on June 19, 1978. In 1980 the first Garfield book Garfield at large appeared .

In 1981, Davis founded Paws, a company that watches over Garfield's world. Every newly developed Garfield article is tested and approved by "Paws", which is supposed to guarantee high quality.

In 1981 and 1986 Davis was named Best Comic Humorist of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), in 1985 he was awarded the Elzie Segar Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Cartoon Industry, and in 1990 the NCS awarded Davis the Reuben Prize for the best comic strip of the year.

Davis was also awarded four Emmys by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his animated works Garfield on the Town (1983), Garfield in the Rough (1984), Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985) and Garfield's Babes & Bullets "(1989). In addition, 13 episodes of the CBS special productions were produced, all of which were broadcast at prime time and were nominated for an Emmy . To date, 33 of his comic books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. 1991 Davis was from Ball State University and the Purdue University to honor Doctor appointed, which represented the culmination of his career.

In 1988 Jim Davis' animated series " Garfield and Friends " started in America (until 1991).

To date, Jim Davis writes and draws for American newspapers (and currently appears in 2,570 newspapers with over 263 million readers worldwide), his online site, and from time to time he publishes a new comic book. His latest work is the book for the movie "Garfield", which was released in summer 2004. Garfield has now been translated into 27 languages, and Garfield books have sold more than 130 million copies to date. He himself had never expected Garfield to be successful. According to a statement by him, after a few comic strips only an anthology should follow, after which the series should be ended.

Ironically, Davis never kept a hangover himself because his first wife was allergic to cats.

Davis is a second marriage and has three children.
