James Garvin "Jim" Stewart (born March 9, 1954 in Kilwinning , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player .

Career

society

Stewart began his career as a youth player with the amateur club Troon FC . In 1970 he moved to FC Kilmarnock , which he left in 1977 for England. From 1977 to 1980 he played in the Football League First Division for Middlesbrough FC . From there he returned to Scotland in 1980. With the Glasgow Rangers , he spent his most successful years at club level. In 1981 he won the Scottish Football Cup with the Rangers and the League Cup the following year . In 1983 the Rangers moved back to the final of the Scottish League Cup , in which they were defeated 1: 2 against Celtic Glasgow . Stewart left the Rangers in 1984 and moved to FC St. Mirren , where he was only used sporadically in the following two years. In 1986 he ended his active career at Partick Thistle .

National team

Stewart was appointed to the Scottish squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany as the third goalkeeper without a previous international appearance , in which he was not used. In 1977 and 1978 he played in two friendly matches against Chile (4-2) and Norway (3-2) for the Scottish national team.

Coaching career

After his playing career he worked as a goalkeeping coach at Kilmarnock and Heart of Midlothian . In August 2007 he moved to the Glasgow Rangers in the same capacity. He also worked for the Scottish Football Association as a youth goalkeeping coach before joining the Scottish national team in 2013. Stewart left Rangers in March 2017 after Pedro Caixinha was named team manager there. From May 2017 to January 2018 he was the goalkeeping coach for English second division club Nottingham Forest .

Personal

His son Colin (* 1980) also became a professional soccer player and, like his father, played in the position of goalkeeper. Former Scottish international Julie Fleeting is his daughter-in-law.
