The João Coutinho class is a class of six corvettes in the Portuguese Navy . They have been in service since the mid-1970s. The units still in service are now used as patrol boats.

A few more corvette classes were derived from this class. These included the Baptista-de-Andrade- , Descubierta- , Espora- or. MEKO 140 and D'Estienne d'Orves class .

history

The ships were designed in Portugal, but they were built in Germany and Spain, as Portugal urgently needed them for use in its colonies, which were then striving for independence.

After commissioning, they were used on patrol and combat missions in Angola , Mozambique , Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde . After the African colonies had gained their independence, the ships were used as patrol boats in Portuguese territorial waters.

In the years 1989–1991 the main radar was modernized and satellite communication ( Inmarsat ) was installed. A SIFICAP satellite data exchange system for fisheries protection with land operations centers was also installed. The anti-submarine equipment was expanded and the crew reduced as a result of the changed tasks.

units

All ships are based in Lisbon ; they were named after politicians and officers who played a role in Portuguese naval and colonial history.
