João Rodrigo Silva Santos , called João Rodrigo (born November 8, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro ; † October 29, 2013 ibid), was a Brazilian football player. In Brazil he played in numerous clubs from the second tier such as his parent club Bangu AC in Rio or the Clube do Remo in northeast Brazil. In 1999 he won the double in Honduras with CD Olimpia . In Europe he was in Sweden for a short time at Östers IF . His murder, which appeared particularly gruesome, attracted worldwide attention.

Career

João Rodrigo began his career in the youth team of Bangu AC . On April 2, 1996 he was used for the first time in the first team. Two years later he scored his first league goal against Fluminense FC . In the same year he was loaned to the most successful club in Honduras , the Club Olimpia Deportivo . He won both the national championship and the national cup with the club that year.

After he was loaned to Atlético Sorocaba, he returned in 2000 to Bangu AC, who now played in the Brazilian second division . There he developed into one of the most dangerous strikers in his club. At the beginning of 2001, João Rodrigo was seriously injured and was out for the rest of the season.

In 2003 he was loaned again and played in Sweden for Östers IF , where he scored one goal in six first division games. In 2004 he returned to his hometown club and was sold to Madueira EC a year later . At this point, João Rodrigo had appeared 103 times for Bangu and had scored 33 goals for the club. 2000, when Bangu finished eighth in the national second division, the last season of importance for the traditional club, he was Bangu's top scorer.

This was followed by positions in various clubs until he finally ended his career as a footballer in 2011. He opened a retail store for organic food and natural cosmetics in Realengo, a petty bourgeois district in the west of Rio near Bangu .

Private

Santos was married to Geisa Silva, who was born in 1982. She was employed by the pacification troops of Rio de Janeiro and was employed in pacifying favelas , such as the last one in São Carlos in the north of Rio. However, she was not involved in raids, but supported young people with social projects and gave swimming lessons, for example.

assassination

On October 28, 2013 at 7:45 p.m., João Rodrigo closed his shop. While leaving his shop, he was dragged into his own car and kidnapped by several attackers. When João Rodrigo did not arrive at home, his wife Geisa reported him missing to the police the night of the following day.

At around 5:30 am, his wife found her husband's backpack on the threshold of their house. In the backpack was the cut off head of the ex-football professional. Both eyes and tongue had been cut from the skull. The torso was later found in the Guandu River in Queimados . The remaining parts of the body were also found scattered around the area.

Given the style of the killing, the police suspect the drug mafia . João Rodrigo himself allegedly had no contact with any form of narcotics and had never received any warnings or threats. Because of his wife's professional activities as a military police officer in the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, the murder was initially interpreted as retaliation by the drug mafia against his wife. It was later revealed that João Rodrigo had posted pictures of dealers and burglars on Facebook days earlier in order to capture them.

João Rodrigo was buried in the Cemitério Jardim da Saudade cemetery in western Rio.
