After being a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union for 4½ years, Bruhn worked for the federal passport control service. In 1956 he joined the Bundeswehr as a first lieutenant (site officer) and was promoted to captain a year later . In this rank he was initially site commander of Schleswig.

His quote became well-known if you want to lead people, you have to love people , which, even after his active time, he gave, above all, to young officer candidates in officer training courses.
