Joachim Luhn , also Luhne (* around 1640 probably in Hamburg ; † July 4, 1717 there ) was a German painter .

Life

Little reliable is known about Joachim Luhn's origins. He probably learned painting in the Netherlands and possibly in Rome , allegedly from Adriaen Backer. Since 1668 he was based in Hamburg and in 1672 he stayed in Braunschweig , where he worked for Duke Anton Ulrich there as well as in Salzdahlum and Wolfenbüttel. In 1673 he received the citizenship of Hamburg and was registered as a master painter on March 18, 1673. In the same year he married Hanna Margarethe, whose father Jacob Mathias Weyer was known as a painter of battle pictures. Excerpts from registers from this time can prove that Luhn was not a native of Hamburg. The couple had a daughter who married the Brunswick court painter Tobias Querfurt in 1691 .

From 1689 to 1693 he worked with Johann Oswald Harms and his son-in-law Tobias on the Salzdahlum Castle, which is under construction and no longer in existence today . He later received further commissions from the princes of the region, including those of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , but remained in Hamburg until the end of his life. From 1692 to 1708 he took over the post of senior man in the local painter's office.

Works

City view of Hamburg from 1681

Luhn painted in almost all branches, mostly concentrating on history painting and portraits. In 1767 he received an order from the church jury of the St. Jacobi Church . Luhn painted 26 pictures that were intended for the gallery in front of the Chorlettner . In addition, he created several works for the council chamber of the Hamburg city hall according to the invoices of the municipal building yard . This included a view of Hamburg, which he completed in 1681 and provided with his signature. All pictures from the time in Hamburg except for the city panorama are considered lost. The Hamburg merchant Heinrich Kühl bought the cityscape in 1819 and donated it to the Jacobikirche, where it can still be seen today. In 1688 he also decorated the ballroom on the Fuhlentwiete with a ceiling painting, for which there is a preliminary drawing in the Hamburg State Archives. In addition to wall and ceiling paintings, Luhn also made altarpieces for several churches in Hamburg, which show an influence of Otto Wagenfeld. His painting was influenced by the Dutch and influenced by the style of Rembrandt van Rijn , which is reflected in the family portrait. Later elements of Italian painting were added, as they are known from Bernardo Cavallino .

Luhn also painted portraits that showed more of his family surroundings. These are exhibited in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, among others. They are considered to be artistically significant works from the North German Baroque period.
