Joachim Unseld (born September 20, 1953 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German publisher and translator . After a falling out with his father, Siegfried Unseld , at Suhrkamp Verlag , he took over the Frankfurt publishing house in 1994 , which he has been running ever since.

Life

The son of Siegfried and Hildegard Unseld did an apprenticeship in publishing at the Suhrkamp Verlag, which his father managed , after graduating from the Odenwald School . He then studied German , sociology and philosophy in Munich , Paris and Berlin . In 1981 he was at the Technical University of Berlin in Höllerer and Norbert Miller with a thesis on Franz Kafka doctorate . For one year each he worked for the publishers Gallimard in Paris (1978) and Farrar, Straus and Giroux in New York (1981/82).

From January 1983, he took over the role of managing partner of the Suhrkamp and Insel publishing houses as the designated successor to his father. Initially, he was responsible for the sales department, and later he was in charge of overall program work for the areas of Spanish-language, French and, in particular, recent German-language literature. From 1988 to 1991 he acted alongside Siegfried Unseld as an equal publisher of the Suhrkamp and Insel publishers and was particularly responsible for younger German-language literature as well as the edition suhrkamp and suhrkamp taschenbücher series . From October 1990 there was a dispute between Siegfried and Joachim Unseld. In the summer of 1991 he left the publishing houses in his role as managing director, but still retained 20% of the company shares.

In 1991/92 he stayed in Los Angeles for a year, developed contacts with the film industry there, took up a painting project from his youth and founded his own publishing house, Unseld-Verlag .

On October 1, 1994, Joachim Unseld took over the Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt (FVA) . Since then he has been working as a publisher and sole shareholder of the FVA in Frankfurt. The first program appeared at the 1995 Frankfurt Book Fair .

In mid-November 2009 Unseld sold its Suhrkamp company shares to its co-shareholders, half each to Medienholding AG Winterthur and half to the Siegfried and Ulla Unseld Family Foundation. This also ended his protracted resistance to the Suhrkamp Verlag's move to Berlin.

Joachim Unseld lives in Frankfurt. From 2003 to 2011 he held an honorary position as chairman of the board of the Association of German Publishers, has been the first chairman of the board of the Literaturhaus Frankfurt am Main eV since 2009 , and chairman of the book art foundation since 2016 , member of the PEN Center Germany , on the board of trustees of the German Literature Fund , in the Kuratorium Städelschule Portikus eV, the Academy of the German Book Prize and the commission of the Carl-Zuckmayer-Medal . For 2013 he was a member of the Hessen Council for Europe. Together with the writer Bodo Kirchhoff , Unseld and the city of Frankfurt developed the concept and guidelines for the "German Literature Prize", later the German Book Prize, in 2003 .
