Joachim of Prussia
Joachim Franz Humbert Prince of Prussia (born December 17, 1890 in Berlin , † July 18, 1920 in Potsdam ) was the sixth son of the German imperial couple Wilhelm II and Auguste Viktoria .
Life
Joachim, like his brothers, spent his school days in the Plön Prinzenhaus . After completing his military training, he joined the 1st Guard Regiment on foot in 1911 . As early as 1903, the Hamburg shipping company Hapag put the mail steamer Prinz Joachim, named after him, into service.
At the beginning of the First World War , Joachim was shot in the thigh as a captain in the Battle of the Masurian Lakes . On March 11, 1916, he married Princess Marie Auguste von Anhalt . However, this marriage was not a happy one. The couple had their son Karl Franz Joseph von Prussia (1916–1975) since December 1916.
On July 17, 1920 Joachim attended a festival that his cousin Prince Friedrich Sigismund gave in Glienicke Palace . After returning to the Villa Liegnitz , which had remained in the possession of the Hohenzollern family , the prince tried to shoot himself with an army revolver. He was found seriously injured by his brother August Wilhelm . Joachim was immediately taken to the nearby St. Joseph Hospital. He died a day later on July 18, 1920. The reasons why he suicide committed, are in the dark, but a combination of true depressive disposition, the overthrow of the monarchy in Germany in 1918 and the divorce wishes of his wife shortly after the collapse of the monarchy than likely.
Prince Joachim was first buried in the Friedenskirche Potsdam. In 1931 the coffin was transferred to the Temple of Antiquities in the Sanssouci Palace Park. In the place not accessible to the public, the prince rests at the side of his mother and other relatives of Wilhelm II.
