Joachim von Sydow (born December 19, 1632 in Lübenow im Weizacker , † September 26, 1686 in Danzig ) was a German officer in the service of the kingdoms of Sweden and Denmark-Norway and the city of Danzig.

Life

Joachim von Sydow was a son of Jochim von Sydow († 1653) on Blumberg and his wife Anna Catharina von Schöning . In 1648 he began his military career with Lieutenant Colonel Meerbach in Stettin and took part in the fight against imperial troops. Then he came to Lieutenant Colonel Adam von Weyher . In 1655 he entered Swedish service as an ensign under the Dragoons Captain Bomstorff and took part in the Swedish-Polish war . In 1657 Sydow married the daughter Eleonora (1641–1711) of Colonel Sergeant Hans Heinrich von Gräbel. In 1661 he was appointed captain in Wrangel's body regiment . From 1669 to 1671 Sydow was in command of Damm near Stettin. In 1673 he was appointed lieutenant colonel. Until 1682 he was city commander of Hamburg . In 1683 he entered the Danish service, where he became major general and chief of a dragoon regiment. He then entered the service of the city of Danzig and became city commander there. He died after a long illness and was buried on November 28, 1686 in Danzig's Marienkirche , where an epitaph was set for him.

One of his sons was the later lieutenant colonel Georg Heinrich von Sydow (1661-1725), married to Eleonore von Pufendorf (1674-1723), daughter of Chancellor Esaias von Pufendorf (1628-1689). Another son was the future Colonel Bernhard Joachim von Sydow († 1742), married to Beate Elisabeth von Pufendorf, another daughter of the Chancellor Pufendorf; from this marriage comes the grandson Lieutenant General Heinrich Bernhard von Sydow .
