Juan Babot Xaus - also known as Joan Babot - (born September 19, 1918 in Sant Joan Despí , † March 16, 1997 ) was a Spanish football player . The defender played between the 1930s and 1950s at FC Barcelona , with whom he won a Republican-Spanish league title during the civil war , and Espanyol , but had his zenith at Gimnàstic de Tarragona and Real Valladolid .
career
The powerfully built defender Babot started in his home town of Sant Joan Despi, where these days the sports center Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper of FC Barcelona is, at the local club with football, but had a 18-year-old a place in the great FC Barcelona. However, his time at Blaugrana was overshadowed by the protracted civil war in which gaming operations largely came to a standstill. From June to September 1937 he toured North America with FC Barcelona, where the club played 14 games in the USA and Mexico. The trip rehabilitated the financially troubled club, but of the 16 players who set out on the trip, only four, including Babot, returned to Spain. The rest remained in exile.
During the civil war, Barcelona also won the championship of Catalonia, the Liga Catalana , in 1936 and 1938 , as well as the Mediterranean championship of the Liga Mediterránea from 1937, a kind of national championship of the republican rest of Spain. After Levante FC won the parallel cup competition Copa de España Libre , the “Cup of Free Spain” and was recognized by the Spanish Senate as the Spanish Cup winner in 2007 , there are now also thoughts of upgrading the Mediterranean Championship to an official Spanish Championship .
From 1940 to 1942, the avid hunter and cinema fanatic, Babot played for some time with a newcomer to the second division, the AD Ferroviaria railway association in Madrid. In its second season there, however, the club was in third class for a year due to a restructuring of the league, but rose again in second place and was able to hold the class in 1942. In 1943, Ferroviaria fell victim to another league restructuring and should finally say goodbye to bigger football after the late 1940s.
Joan Babot returned to Catalonia in 1942 and played for the fourth division Gimnàstic de Tarragona . In the following year, however, he rose to third, and after two more seasons in the second division. Babot soon became captain of the team, who in 1947 even managed to move up to the Primera División . In the first season he reached a respectable seventh place in the table with el Gimnàstico . In January 1948, the team defeated Real Madrid in their new Estadio Chamartín , today's Bernabéu, 3-1, which was the first defeat for the capital city on the site of their great future triumphs. In 1948, Joan Babot also played for the Catalan football team .
The following season he moved to Real Valladolid , a first division debutant. The 1948/49 season was not only a tough relegation battle for Valladolid's team. In the end, 6th and 13th place were only separated by three points in the table. The Babot team finished twelfth and thus managed to stay in the league. Valladolid was also able to assert itself in the league in the following years and Babot had a permanent place in the regular formation. Valladolid stepped into the national limelight in May 1950 when the club faced Atletico Bilbao in the Spanish Cup final , which Babot's men only lost 4-1 after extra time in the Chamartin of Madrid. In February 1951 Joan Babot was also in the squad of the Spanish national team , but was not used in the 6-3 victory over Switzerland .
Later in the year, the now almost 34-year-old Babot moved to Español Barcelona , where he only made three appearances in the league, scoring his third and last first division goal in a total of 95 games in his first game with a penalty. After only one season he went on loan to the north of Barcelona for one season for second division club UE Sant Andreu , then known as San Andrés, where he ended his career in 1953.
Torneo de Futbol Infantil Joan Babot
Since 2001, the Torneo de Futbol Infantil Joan Babot youth football tournament has been held in his home town of Sant Joan Despí every year. In addition to the Catalan youth teams of FC Barcelona and Espanyol and the local selection as permanent participants, the representatives of other Spanish top clubs such as Real Madrid , Valencia CF and RCD Mallorca have so far participated.
