Johann Michael Fleischmann
Johann Michael Fleischmann (* 1701 in Wörth in Franconia ; † 1768 in Amsterdam ) was a German typographer and type founder . He developed the original cut of the font Antiqua, which is still used today .
Life
Johann Michael Fleischmann did an apprenticeship as a type founder from 1723 to 1724 . Fleischmann then went on a hike and learned the trade in 1727 in the Luther's foundry in Frankfurt , in 1728 with Isaac van der Putte in Amsterdam, then with RC Alberts and Herman Uytwerf in The Hague . From 1730 he worked for Uytwerf. From 1732 he started his own business as a die cutter and two years later as a type caster. At times he ran his own workshop and later worked a lot for the Enschede house in Haarlem .
Fonts
In 1732, Fleischmann developed his font, known today as the Original Fleischmann Antiqua . It still forms the basis of newly developed fonts today . In 1927 L. Wagner developed a modern set of Fleischmann Antiqua , also as italic and semi-bold . In 1993 it became known as DTL Fleischmann and the variant DTL Fleischmann Italic .
The Farnham font family, developed in 2004 by typographer Christian Schwartz , with 25 individual fonts, is a rational design based on the typographic work of Johann Fleischmann. Since 2004, Farnham has been the most widely used of three corporate typefaces in the German daily Frankfurter Rundschau . The numerous variants of the font are helpful for the good legibility and the aesthetic demands of the iPad edition of the newspaper.
