Joaquín Jacinto Francisco Lluch y Garriga OCD (born February 22, 1816 in Manresa , Spain , † September 28, 1882 in Umbrete ) was a Spanish Carmelite and cardinal , as well as Archbishop of Seville and Toledo .

Life

Joaquín Lluch y Garriga was born on February 22, 1816 in Manresa. His parents were Antonio Lluch and Mariana Garriga. They had 13 children. The family moved to Barcelona in 1822 , where Lluch y Garriga studied and graduated with "magna cum laude". In 1830 he entered the Carmelite monastery "El Carmen" in Barcelona. he continued his studies in philosophy in the monastery "Santo Ángel" and went in 1835, when all orders were expelled from Spain, first to Rome and then to Lucca . In 1838 he was ordained a priest and served as novice master and professor in Lucca. In 1847 he returned to Barcelona and was involved in diaconal work. Among other things, he promoted the work of the Lazarists .

In 1858 he was ordained Bishop of the Canary Islands , the following year he was also appointed Administrator of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and ten years later appointed Bishop of Salamanca . He took part in the First Vatican Council . In 1874 he moved to Barcelona and in 1877 he was reappointed administrator of the diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. In the same year, however, he was promoted to Archbishop of Seville . A position traditionally associated with the cardinal office. He was in the consistory on March 27, 1882 by Pope Leo XIII. made cardinal but died before coming to Rome to receive his title. He died in Umbrete on September 28, 1882. His body was buried in Seville.

Awards

Pope Pius IX awarded him a doctorate in theology.

His motto was "In fide et lenitate" (= In faith and meekness).

His tomb was designed by the sculptor Agapit Vallmitjana i Barbany .
