Luis Estéban Domiciano de la Lastra y Cuesta (born December 1, 1803 in Cubas , Cantabria , † May 5, 1876 in Seville ) was a Spanish clergyman, archbishop of Seville and cardinal .

Life

Luis de la Lastra y Cuesta came from a noble family, his parents were the surgeon Bernardo de la Lastra Cuero (1769-1837) and his wife Brígida de la Cuesta Hontañon. He studied at the University of Valladolid and received his doctorate there in 1829 as Doctor iuris utriusque . He had already been ordained a subdeacon in May 1828 , on September 20, 1828 he received the deacon and in December of the same year the priestly ordination .

After holding various offices in the dioceses of his home country, Luis de la Lastra y Cuesta was appointed Bishop of Orense on March 18, 1852 . He was ordained bishop on June 20, 1852 in Madrid Archbishop Giovanni Brunelli , nuncio in Spain; Co- consecrators were Tomás Iglesias y Bárcones , Bishop of Mondoñedo and Patriarch of the West Indies , and Benito Forcelledo Tuero , Bishop of Astorga . On August 3, 1857, Luis de la Lastra y Cuesta was appointed Archbishop of Valladolid and a good five years later, on October 30, 1862, Archbishop of Seville.

Pope Pius IX created Luis de la Lastra y Cuesta in the consistory of March 16, 1863 as cardinal priest . He received the red hat on June 12 of the same year and on July 12, 1863, San Pietro in Vincoli was given to him as the titular church . From 1868 he was senator of the Kingdom of Spain. Luis de la Lastra y Cuesta took part in the September Revolution in Spain in 1868 , during which the Jesuits and the supporters of Queen Isabella II were expelled from Seville, with the destruction of monasteries and church buildings.

He was buried in Seville Cathedral in 1876 . The sculptor Ricardo Bellever created a statue of the late cardinal in 1880.
