Juan de la Cruz Ignacio Cardinal Moreno y Maisonave (born November 24, 1817 in Guatemala , † August 28, 1884 in Madrid ) was a French cardinal of the Roman Church , who was last Archbishop of Toledo between 1875 and 1884 .

Life

He was the son of Miguel Moreno y Morán de Butrón (1782-1851), a native of Guayaquil , and his wife Dolores Maisonave, who came from Cádiz and whose father was French. A previous relative was Toribio de Mogrovejo , the canonized third Archbishop of Lima . His cousin Gabriel García Moreno (1821–1875) was later President of Ecuador .

The family left Guatemala in 1823 after the victory of the independence movement, but he saw Guatemala as his home throughout his life. After a short stay in Scotland, the family went to Spain. The father was a member of the Cortes of Cádiz and a civil servant. His training took place in Breenock in Scotland (1823), in Puerto de Santa María in Spain (1825), then in Valencia (1830), furthermore in 1834 at the Jesuit college in Madrid and finally at the Universidad Central of Madrid, where he was on August 7th 1842 obtained the academic degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . From March 1844 to 1849 he was Professor of Law (Notariado) at the Universidad Central .

Juan de la Cruz Ignacio Moreno y Maisonave was ordained a priest on July 1, 1849 . After August 1, 1857 Bishop of Oviedo had been chosen and confirmed on 25 August 1857, the Archbishop of Toledo donated to him on December 8, 1857 Cirilo de Alameda y Brea the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba Antonius Maria Claret and Fernando de la Puente y Primo de Rivera , Archbishop of Burgos . He was then elected Archbishop of Valladolid on April 25, 1863 and confirmed on October 1, 1863, after which he took office on January 10, 1864.
