Cardinal Marcelo Spínola y Maestre (born January 14, 1835 in San Fernando , Spain , † January 20, 1906 in Seville ) was Archbishop of Seville .

Life

Marcelo Spínola y Maestre received his theological , philosophical and legal training at the universities of Granada , Valencia and Seville. He completed his studies with a degree in canon law and civil law . He then opened a law firm in Huelva and offered free legal advice to destitute citizens.

In 1863 he received the minor orders , followed by the ordination as subdeacon on December 19, 1863. On February 20, 1864 he was incardinated with the ordination of deacons in the clergy of the Archdiocese of Seville . Finally, on March 21, 1864, he was ordained a priest . From 1864 to 1869 he worked as a chaplain in the Archdiocese of Seville, from 1869 to 1871 he was canon of the cathedral chapter of Cádiz . From 1871 to 1879 he worked as a pastor in San Lorenzo, in 1879 he became a canon at the Cathedral of Seville .

In 1880 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Milos and auxiliary bishop in Seville. The Bishop ordination received Marcelo Spinola y Maestre by Cardinal Joaquin Lluch y Garriga ; Co- consecrators were Manuel María González y Sánchez , Bishop of Jaén , and Mariano Miguel Gómez Alguacil y Fernández , Bishop of Vitoria . In 1884 Marcelo Spínola y Maestre became Bishop of Coria , where a year later he founded the order of the “Servants of the Divine Heart”. In 1886 the Pope entrusted him with the management of the diocese of Málaga , and in 1895 he entrusted him with the management of the archdiocese of Seville. Marcelo Spínola y Maestre was Senator of the Kingdom of Spain from 1891 to 1894 and from 1898 until his death . Pope Pius X accepted him on December 11, 1905 to the College of Cardinals . Marcelo Spínola y Maestre died in Seville on January 20, 1906.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on March 29, 1987 .
