Joaquín Ruiz

Joaquín Ruiz Llorente (born January 12, 1959 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish judoka . He was world championship runner-up in 1991 and European champion in 1988.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Joaquín Ruiz fought in the lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms. Ruiz won his first international medal at the 1984 European Championships in Liège . After losing to Tamas Namgalauri from the Soviet Union in the round of 16 , Ruiz won two fights in the round of hope and secured the bronze medal with a victory over the Hungarian Joszef Tóth . Three months later, Ruiz won his opening match against Alvaro Sanabria from Costa Rica at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2:19 minutes . In his second fight he was defeated by Liaw Der-Cheng from the Republic of China with a minor penalty (chui).

At the European and World Championships in the next few years, Ruiz did not reach a placement among the top eight fighters. Only at the 1987 Mediterranean Games he received a bronze medal. At the European Championships in Pamplona in 1988 , Ruiz reached the final and won the title by defeating Sven Loll, who started for the GDR . Four months later, Ruiz defeated the Italian Ezio Gamba in the second round of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . After defeats against the French Marc Alexandre and the Hungarian Bertalan Hajtós , he finished seventh.

In 1989 Ruiz reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Helsinki . After defeats against the Finns Jorma Korhonen in the semifinals and Giorgi Tenadze from the Soviet Union, Ruiz finished fifth. At the 1989 World Championships , he was eliminated from the GDR in his opening fight against Mike Schulz . In 1991 Ruiz reached the final at the World Championships in Barcelona with victories over the French Patrick Rosso in the quarter-finals and Wladimeri Dgebuadze from the Soviet Union in the semi-finals. After his loss to the Japanese Toshihiko Koga , Ruiz received the silver medal. At the European Championships in Paris in 1992 he lost in the semifinals to the French Bruno Carabetta , in the battle for a bronze medal he defeated Jorma Korhonen. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 Ruiz won his first two fights and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Algerian Meziane Dahmani after 29 seconds.

Ruiz won nine Spanish championship titles: 1980, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993.
