Job (bishop)

Job (* as Richard John Osacky on March 18, 1946 in Chicago ; †  December 18, 2009 in Maumee , Ohio ) was an Orthodox Archbishop and Bishop of the Midwestern Diocese of the Orthodox Church in America .

Life

Richard John Osacky studied at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb , Illinois and at Saint Tikhon Seminary in South Canaan , Pennsylvania . In 1970 he became cantor and youth minister in the parish of Saint John the Baptist Church in Black Lick, Pennsylvania. Later he was responsible pastor for the Orthodox church services as well as the implementation of religious instruction and youth work, icons and painting. His commitment to youth work has been recognized nationwide. In 1973 he was ordained a deacon and accepted into the priesthood of Bishop Theodosius of Pittsburgh (later: Metropolitan Theodosius of America and Canada). In addition to his pastoral work, he was a college chaplain for Indiana University in Pennsylvania.

In 1975 Job was given the usual tonsure as a celibate priest ("Father Job") priest monk . He was also named archimandrite in 1982 . The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America elected him Bishop of Hartford and the Diocese of New England. Episcopal ordination took place on January 29, 1983 by Primate Theodosius Lazor at All Saints Church in Hartford, Connecticut. At the November 5, 1992 synod, Job was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Chicago and the Midwest. He was enthroned as bishop of his hometown at Holy Trinity Cathedral on February 6, 1993. Bishop Job was committed to the numerous new parishes in the diocese.

In recognition of his more than twenty years of successful work as archpriest, he was bestowed the personal title of Archbishop at the Holy Synod in 2004. Archbishop Job has gained national fame in recent years for cracking down on alleged financial mismanagement and corruption in church leadership.

He was considered a specialist in iconography and, as a renowned iconologist, was a sought-after lecturer.
