Jochen A. Bär

Jochen A. Bär (* 1967 in Heidelberg ) is a German specialist in German ( Linguist ). He is Professor of German Linguistics at the University of Vechta and (since 2015) a member of the main board of the Society for German Language . He has been its deputy chairman since 2019.

Career

Bär studied German Philology and Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg . In 1993 he passed the master’s examination. From 1993 to 1998 he was a research assistant at the Heidelberg German Department (Workplace for the Early New High German Dictionary ). In 1998 he was at Oskar Reichmann with the work language reflection of the early German Romanticism doctorate . He then worked for three years as a research assistant in the office of the Society for the German Language (GfdS) in Wiesbaden, where he was responsible, among other things, for documentation on contemporary German and for telephone and written language advice. In 2000 he took over the management of the GfdS language advisory service. In 2001 he returned to Heidelberg University and became an assistant to Oskar Reichmann. In 2008 he completed his habilitation with a basic thesis on linguistic hermeneutics and received the venia legendi in German linguistics .

After substituting professorships at the University of Gießen , Heidelberg University, Heidelberg University of Education and RWTH Aachen University , he accepted a professorship for German Linguistics at the University of Vechta in 2012 . He was visiting professor at the Universities of Bristol , Aosta and Prague, among others .

Work areas

Bär's main focus is on "cultural linguistics". They include theoretical and empirical semantics, conceptual history (especially the 18th and 19th century), language history of the Germans (from the beginning to the present), German grammar, language reflecting past and present and Applied Linguistics ( literature linguistics , linguistic criticism , directory assistance / advice ).

Bär is the editor of the conceptual historical reference work Central Concepts of the Classical-Romantic “Art Period” (1760–1840) , a member of the Society for the History of German Language , the Research Networks Literary Linguistics , Language and Knowledge and Cultural Linguistics and the Linguistic Language Criticism Working Group . He heads the office for language information and language advice at the University of Vechta, is deputy chairman of the Society for German Language (GfdS) and chairman of the GfdS branch Vechta.
