Jos Metzler
Jos Metzler (also: Pater Jodocus Metzler , Jost Metzler or Mezler and Jodocus Metzlerus or Jodoci Mezleri ; * 1574 in Andelsbuch ; † April 7, 1639 in Wil ) was an Austrian-Swiss monk , monastery librarian in St. Gallen , chronicler , lawyer and Writer . He also used the pseudonym : Hermannum Josemann .
Life, study and work
Jos Metzler was born in Andelsbuch as the son of the Bregenzerwald Landammann Kaspar Metzler and his wife Ursula Berlinger. In 1593 he joined the Benedictine order and studied philosophy and theology in Dillingen until 1595, and canon law in Rome from 1601 to 1603 , graduating with an excellent degree.
In 1604 Metzler was appointed abbey librarian in the Abbey Library of St. Gallen . In 1605 he was made subprior and novice master , and from 1605 he was appointed abbot governor of Wil (St. Gallen) and St. Johann in the Thurtal . Several times during this period up to 1613 he was sent to Rome for the St. Gallen Monastery . Among other things, in a canon law dispute between the Prince Abbot of St. Gallen and the Bishop of Constance, Jakob Fugger , with his interventions and submissions in court on March 1, 1613, he was able to reach a decision in favor of the St. Gallen Monastery. As a result of this decision, an ecclesiastical ordinariate was created in St. Gallen and Metzler was appointed vicar general on August 22, 1614 , an office he held until 1620.
Works
Metzler wrote a history of the St. Gallen monastery and other Benedictine monasteries, the book of the dead and the list of abbots of the St. Gallen monastery, legal works for training in the monastery school and many other works. However, a considerable part of these has been lost. Metzler wrote a pamphlet against the Protestants under the pseudonym Hermannum Josemann .
The works by Metzler reproduced here are only a selection and are therefore incomplete.
