Joe Boyd (born August 5, 1942 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American music producer. The artists he supervised included Nick Drake , Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band .

biography

Joe Boyd grew up in Princeton , New Jersey . As a student at Harvard , he organized a private living room gig (“a neighbor's large living room”) for Lonnie Johnson , who had been rediscovered a week or two earlier by jazz radio journalist Chris Albertson , and a campus gig (“dining room at Harvard's Eliot House ”) by Sleepy John Estes .

After graduating in 1964, he began working as a tour manager for the organizer and producer George Wein . He organized and supervised European tours for well-known blues and jazz musicians. As a production manager at the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, he saw Bob Dylan switch from acoustic to electric guitar in 1965 .

In autumn 1965 Boyd took over the management of the newly opened European office of the music label Elektra Records in London . A year later he gave up this job and founded the UFO Club in London with John Hopkins , where bands like Pink Floyd and Soft Machine began their careers. He also built up the production company Witchseason Productions, which also produced Pink Floyd's first single in 1967 .

In early 1971, Boyd sold Witchseason to Island Records . In Los Angeles , he became the head of the film music division of Warner Brothers . Films for whose soundtracks he was responsible include, among others, A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick and When Everyone Is First by John Boorman . In 1973 Boyd put together the widely acclaimed documentary Jimi Hendrix .

Boyd continued to work as a record producer, including for Maria Muldaur and Chris McGregor . In 1980 he founded Hannibal Records, where they were particularly active in the field of world music , but also worked with bands such as REM and 10,000 Maniacs . 1988 was Boyd producer of Michael Caton-Jones ' film debut Scandal about the Profumo Affair with John Hurt , Joanne Whalley and Bridget Fonda in the lead roles. In 2001 he left Hannibal Records. In 2006 his book White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s was published .
