biography

Walsh, who worked as a manager of a dairy , began his political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1977 with the election to the House of Commons, in which he represented the constituency of Cork South-West until he was defeated in 1981 . He was then from 1981 to 1982 representative of the culture and education group in the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), before he was re-elected member of the lower house in 1982 and after six re-elections until 2007 again represented the constituency of Cork South-East .

After the Fianna Fáil electoral victory, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Industry on March 10, 1987 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey and thus took over his first government office as "Junior Minister". He was then from July 19, 1989 to February 11, 1992 Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Albert Reynolds , Haughey's successor as Prime Minister, appointed him Minister of Agriculture and Food on February 11, 1992 and, following a reorganization of the ministries, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry on January 13, 1993. He held this office until the end of Reynolds' term on December 14, 1994.

After the Fianna Fáil won again, he was appointed Minister for Agriculture and Food on June 26, 1997 by Prime Minister Bertie Ahern . After a renewed reorganization of responsibilities, he was Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development from September 27, 1999 to June 6, 2002, and was most recently again Minister for Agriculture and Food on June 6, 2002. On September 29, 2004 he resigned from his ministerial office and left the Ahern government.

In 2007 Walsh waived another candidacy for the House of Commons and thus left the Dáil in 2007.

Walsh left a wife and five children when he died.
