Joep van Lieshout (actually Johannes Petrus Antonius van Lieshout ; born September 28, 1963 in Ravenstein , Province of Noord-Brabant ) is a Dutch sculptor and object artist whose work is located on the border between art, craft , architecture , design and the art of survival . Joep van Lieshout has been working with his Atelier van Lieshout team since 1995 .

life and work

Johannes van Lieshout spent his school days in Ravenstein and Oss . From 1980 to 1985 he studied at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. From 1985 to 1987 van Lieshout was given a work space in Ateliers '63 in Haarlem , where he completed post-graduate training. He started working with polyester there. He spent 1987 in the Villa Arson in Nice.

Joep van Lieshout's work has a practical purpose. His sculptures are cupboards, tables, kitchen furniture, toilets, bars and much more. Its mode of production is efficient and suitable for industrial mass production . The edition of the objects is unlimited. Plastic in striking colors has become the trademark of Atelier van Lieshout.

Freedom, food and sex are important issues in van Lieshout's life. Sex is a recurring theme in all of his works . With the Bais-ô-Drôme (1995) a mobile unit for relaxation, fun and sex was created. He furnished a room in the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam with a bed suitable for group sex and a hotel room in Tokyo with a female and male figure with enormous genitals.

Furniture

In the course of the 1980s, Joep van Lieshout increasingly used a formal language that stems from furniture design . The 1989 Collectie , which mainly consists of bookshelves and tables, he has exhibited in several museums and galleries. He uses standard dimensions. The objects are not unique, but can be commissioned if required.

For him, furniture is objects that can be combined with sex, violence, politics, madness and deviant behavior. He defines himself as an artist, but says: "It is much easier to sell furniture than art, even if the prices are almost identical".

Replicas of organs

In 1992 the exhibition Bioprick took place in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen . One of the works exhibited there is Kut / Vagina . The letters “Kut” were attached to the wall in large format. Biopik / Biopenis is an approx. 2 meter tall, yellow sculpture made of polyester that is more reminiscent of an oversized dildo than an organic, erect penis . The material is polished smooth and light. The Dutch words Kut and Pik originally come from the vulgar language and can therefore be suitable for provoking the viewer in the context of a museum exhibition.

Further phallus shapes and other replicas of human organs (heart, rectum , brain, liver, female and male sexual organs) were later produced by the Atelier van Lieshout. Examples are the works Penis (2003), Wombhouse (2004) and Bar Rectum (2005).

Atelier van Lieshout

In 1994 Joep van Lieshout equipped the Lille Grand Palais in France, designed by the architect Rem Koolhaas , with sanitary facilities, bars and reception counters. This major order provided the financial means for the establishment of Atelier van Lieshout in 1995. Joep van Lieshout has been working under the name Atelier van Lieshout since 1995. On the one hand to document the aspect of working with his team, on the other hand to accommodate customers who prefer to do business with a company rather than a single artist.

Joep van Lieshout has bought a large plot of land on the edge of an industrial area in Rotterdam and is the director of Atelier van Lieshout . He has a managing director, a sales manager, public relations employees , and more than ten employees who work full-time on his designs. Joep van Lieshout, on the other hand, often prefers to work in peace, draw and develop new ideas. Containers and various objects stand on the site, which serve as living, working and private rooms. The main building is a 15 meter high hall in which the works are produced.

Well-known works published under the name Atelier van Lieshout are AVL-Ville , A-Portable , Sportopia , Bonnefantopia , Slave City and the internationally exhibited Mobile Homes .
