Johan Ludwig Mowinckel

Johan Ludwig Mowinckel (born October 22, 1870 in Bergen , †  September 30, 1943 in New York City ) was a Norwegian shipowner and liberal politician of the Venstre party.

Mowinckel was mayor of Bergen between 1902 and 1906 and again from 1911 to 1913. He was a member of parliament from 1906 to 1909, 1913 to 1918 and 1922 until his death. Mowinckel was President of Parliament from 1916 to 1918 and held the office of Prime Minister of Norway three times from 1924 to 1926, 1928 to 1931 and 1933 to 1935 .

From 1925 to 1936 he was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee. He was married to Caroline Andrea Mowinckel and their son Johann Ludwig Mowinckel junior worked as a conductor and composer. The Mowinckel coast of Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic bears his name in his honor.
