Professional background

Johann August attended the Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg , which he successfully completed in 1827 with the Abitur . In the same year he was enrolled at the medical faculty of the Albertina in Königsberg. In the summer of 1844 he was able to take part in the university's 300th anniversary, and his name appears in the Albertina's memorial book. After passing the study and promotion to Dr. med. he settled down as a doctor in Memel.

In Memel he was one of the co-initiators of an infant care facility that opened in 1840. Muttray, who got involved in politics early on, was also one of the members of the constitutional association founded on May 14, 1848 in his hometown. From May to November 1848 he took over the chairmanship of the association.

In constituency 1, which consisted of the districts of Memel and Heydekrug , Muttray was put up as a candidate for the office of deputy in the Frankfurt National Assembly. In the election on May 10, 1848, he was confirmed by the electors . The higher regional court assessor Leonhard Presting was appointed as his deputy . In a meeting in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt on May 31, 1848, the deputy Muttray von Memel was recognized as a legitimate member of the National Assembly. In parliament, Muttray was not noticed either as a speaker or as a petitioner. On June 29, 1848, Archduke Johann of Austria was elected Imperial Administrator by the assembly , and Muttray also voted for him. He was the only East Prussian who belonged to the delegation with 50 other members of the delegation who solemnly escorted the Archduke from his apartment in Frankfurt to the Paulskirche. On July 15, 1848, he took part in a meeting in the Paulskirche, after which he was absent without excuse. The President of the National Assembly had asked Muttray's deputy, Presting, to take his place.

Muttray continued to practice as a resident doctor in Memel. He died in his hometown on February 26, 1872, at the age of 63.
