Johann Baptist Lampi the Younger, 1798 Knights of Lampi, Italian Giovanni Battista Lampi il Giovane, Russian Иоганн Баптист Лампи Младший (* 4. March 1775 in Trento , † 17th February 1837 in Vienna ) was an in Russia and Austria active portraitist Italian origin.

Life

His parents were the portrait painter Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder (1751–1830) and his wife Anna Maria Franchi (1745–1795). His brother Franz Xaver (1782–1852) and his sons Johann Baptist Matthias (1807–1857) and Alexander (1810–1832) also took up the painter's profession.

Johann Baptist the Younger studied from June 3, 1786 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Hubert Maurer and Heinrich Friedrich Füger . Later he worked under his father. He followed this to St. Petersburg in 1791 , where he stayed until 1804.

Lampi owned a house in Baden near Vienna and after his stay in St. Petersburg mainly worked in Vienna, where he became a member of the academy in 1813 and devoted himself mainly to portraiture . Stylistically, he couldn't break away from his father. He painted public figures of the time, but also genre scenes and religious subjects.

Works by Johann Baptist Lampi the Younger can be found in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere , the Wien Museum and the Salzburg Museum .
