Johann Basedow , also Johann Heinrich Basedow , completely Johannes Joachim Heinrich Basedow (born August 26, 1830 in Groß Pravtshagen, today a part of Upahl ; † August 5, 1899 in Schwerin ) was a German disabled educator.

Life

Basedow was the son of a day laborer . Due to his talent, he was able to attend the citizens 'school in Grevesmühlen and then the teachers' seminar in Ludwigslust . In 1854 he passed his exam as a teacher training candidate. In October 1854 he began his service as a mad teacher at the Grand Ducal Lunatic Asylum on the Sachsenberg near Schwerin. In 1867 he persuaded the Grand Duke to found his own institution for children and became the first inspector of this educational and care institution for mentally weak children on the Lewenberg , which he headed for 32 years until his death in 1899. As the name he chose indicated, his aim was to support the disabled children within the scope of their possibilities and to make them fit for life. The children entrusted to the institution should be taught according to their level of education and their abilities and not experience the fate of a locked up "institution idiot". In 1898 the institution had 60 male and 55 female pupils . For his work he received the Order of Merit of the Wendish Crown in gold in 1897 .

A bronze portrait bust created by Hugo Berwald in 1908 in front of his long-term workplace, today's House 16 on the grounds of the Helios Kliniken Schwerin, commemorates him .

His daughter Margarete (1871–1944) married the theologian Georg Krüger-Haye in 1892 .
