Johann Berger (General)
Johann Berger (* 4. August 1951 in Bad Reichenhall ) is Brigadier General of the Army of the Armed Forces retired. In his last military service, he was Commander of the Bavarian State Command from February 1, 2013 to November 2013, and was German Deputy Director at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies from February 1, 2015 to September 30, 2019 .
Military career
After graduating from high school in 1971, Berger joined the mountain troops as an officer candidate . From 1976 to 1979 he was platoon leader in the Mountain Infantry Battalion 231, of whose 2nd company he became chief in 1980. From 1984 to 1986 he studied at the command academy of the Bundeswehr , after which he was G2 in the II Corps in Ulm. From 1987 to 1990 he was G3 in the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 in his hometown, then for one year commander of the Mountain Infantry Battalion 232 in Berchtesgaden . From 1991 to 1993 he worked as a speaker in the Federal Ministry of Defense, which was followed by a position as head of the general staff course at the Hamburg leadership academy. In 1995 he became Chief of Staff at Military District Command VIII / 14th Panzer Grenadier Division , and in 1997/98 he studied at the United States Army War College in Carlisle (Pennsylvania) . After his return from the USA, he became the commander of the 23 Mountain Infantry Brigade in Bad Reichenhall. In 1999 he commanded the DFGFA (Franco-German Group / Groupement Franco-Allemand) in Rajlovac for several months during the SFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina . In 2001 he became commander of the infantry school in Hammelburg and general of the infantry . From 2007 to January 2013 he was deputy commander in the military area command IV in the Munich Fürst-Wrede barracks .
On February 1, 2013, he became the commander of the Bavarian State Command . He was retired in November 2013.
Further career
From February 2015 to October 2019, Berger was one of the two deputy directors of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
Berger is also active as an advisory board member in the Bavarian Association for Security in Business (BVSW), as a member of the board of trustees of the DACH Foundation of Catholic Military Pastoral Care, as a member of the general assembly of the European Academy of Bavaria e. V. and chairman of the German Soldiers and Comradeship Association (DSKB) eV, Bad Reichenhall district association.
Private
Berger is married, Roman Catholic and has two children.
